	They are next to diamond in hardness and therefore resistant to wear. However, they were not always called promise rings; this name became popular during the 16th and 17th centuries in Europe as rings were exchanged to show friendship between two people. Another common type of promise ring was the poesy ring, which was an engraved band with various promises and sentiments that were given to a lover or dear friend.

Cut Quality
Ideal cut refers to the angles and proportions of a diamond that satisfy very precise mathematical formulas. The result is that the the ideal cut diamond internally reflects most light from one mirror-like facet to another and disperse and reflect it through the top of the stone. This results in a display of brilliance and fire, thereby placing ideal-cut diamonds higher on the quality pyramid than deep or shallow-cut diamonds.

Color
In the near colorless category H color grade is the second best. Most H color diamonds have a very light yellow or gray tint that may be more noticeable when the diamond is placed on a white surface. Diamonds with H color grade appear white and are great values because they are more plentiful and as a result less expensive.

Clarity
SI1 clarity diamonds are slightly included. SI1 diamonds have some inclusions visible under 10x magnification but not easily visible to the naked eye. A diamond with this grade of clarity is an excellent choice for someone on a limited budget.
